Cultural Sensitivity and Competence When Building a Health History for Patients from Diverse Backgrounds

The truth is that the world is increasingly becoming a multicultural society. This is proving the adage at the beginning of the new millennium that the world will soon become a global village, especially with the advent of the Internet. Travel across borders and immigration has increased to unprecedented levels. This has meant that communities around the world are changing in terms of demographics, infusing newer cultures brought from different parts of the world. Healthcare workers have had to adapt to this scenario in order to continue offering care that is not only patient-centered and equitable; but also safe, efficient, effective, and timely (Tzelepis et al., 2015).Diversity and Health Assessments Discussions Essay.  The healthcare workers such as nurses have had to be trained on transcultural nursing theory (TCN) by Madeleine Leininger, which essentially means holistic care (McFarland & Wehbe-Alamah, 2019). Each is now expected to understand each unique patient’s beliefs and preferences in the context of the patient’s cultural background. The objective is to harness these unique personal preferences and beliefs to build on the therapeutic relationship between the healthcare worker and the patient. This is cultural competence and sensitivity. This paper examines how to build a culturally sensitive and competent health history for a patient from a different cultural background in the context of patient AG, a 54 year-old Caucasian male.
